There has never been a greater need for health professionals and students to educate policy makers about global AIDS. This week hundreds of universities around the country are taking part in the Global AIDS Week of Action, which PHR is coordinating with the American Medical Student Association, the Student Global AIDS Campaign and University Coalitions for Global Health. Thousands of students are mobilizing their communities through education and action on pressing issues like the health worker shortage in Africa and HIV prevention and treatment for injection drug users.

Students are working to make a big impact this week with postcards to Congress on the health worker shortage in Africa and a petition drive to expand HIV prevention methods for injection drug users. Students will also be working on important issues like microbicides and other needed interventions for women and treatment access worldwide. Activities range from lunchtime lectures to petition drives to film screenings to a Global AIDS fashion show fundraiser.

During this week US students have an amazing opportunity to connect with Ugandan health professional students in the fight against global AIDS. We have organized a conference call on March 1st, at Noon EST, where US and Ugandan students will share their stories, answer questions and discuss future collaboration opportunities.

I’ll keep you posted throughout the week with updates from chapters, so check back here often.

In the meantime, you can download the healthworker shortage postcard (PDF) and the petition to expand HIV prevention methods for injection drug users (PDF). You can also sign the petition online in the PHR Action Center.
