Physicians for Human Rights

Physicians for Human Rights was founded in 1986 on the idea that health professionals, with their specialized skills, ethical duties, and credible voices, are uniquely positioned to investigate the health consequences of human rights violations and work to stop them. PHR mobilizes health professionals to advance health, dignity, and justice and promotes the right to health for all. We are headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and maintain an office in Washington, DC. We are a non-profit, non-sectarian organization funded through private foundations and by individual donors. Membership is open to all, not just health professionals. PHR is a 1997 co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

PHR’s National Student Program

The Student Program strives to advance health professional students’ understanding and lifelong investment in health and human rights activism, and to cultivate their unique contributions as advocates promoting health and human rights locally, nationally and globally.

2009-2010 Program Focus

The Student Program is dedicated to providing training and education, health rights advocacy opportunities, and a vibrant community for health professional students interested in building their power as right-to-health advocates.

This academic year, the Student Program is concentrating our efforts on PHR’s Global Health Action Campaign, which works to advocate for effective, well-funded, integrated health systems that are equitable and accessible to all, and our Health and Human Rights Education Campaign, which will assist students and faculty in formally incorporating health and human rights materials in medical and public health schools’ curricula nationwide.
